About Us |
|
Mary Sternhagen was born to Mr. and Mrs. Arnold Bickett on a farm south of Beresford, SD. As the third oldest child in a family of ten children, there was always lots of good things cooking.
Her first attempt at baking was at about 4 years old when she took every egg in the house, mixed them with flour, salt and pepper and put her cake to bake in an unheated oven. This wonderful creation was not a hit with her mother when she started breakfast the next morning.
She always loved to be helping cook, maybe helping with the meals for threshing crews or at family gatherings at her grandparents.
When she was a sophomore in high school, her family moved to a farm near Winfred, SD. She finished school at St. Agatha’s in Howard, SD.
After graduation, she moved to Yankton, SD.
In 1953 she met and Married Bill Sternhagen and Scotland, SD became her home. The first 4 years were busy ones as she had four sons. She spent her time planning and cooking for her hungry family. Many of the recipes in the cookbook were tried and used during these years.
In 1965 she started working for Delux Cleaners which she later owned and operated. 1967 was a really great year, this is when her only daughter Beth was born.
Years later she started working evenings and weekends at Ray’s Lounge, in Scotland, SD. When Ray opened his upstairs for class reunions, wedding suppers and other gatherings, she began cooking for large groups.
Her recipes in this cookbook were gathered from the threshers meals to after school lunches, family holiday meals and make special things for her grandchildren and great grandchildren, to the many class reunions, rehearsal suppers and Sunday smorgasbords at Ray’s lounge.
Mary turned 75 in May of 2008, she currently lives in Belle Fourche, SD where she still works as a cook. She still cooks and bakes all kinds of Christmas treats for family and friends.
Marie Ann Vitek was born on a farm 3 ½ miles northwest of Tabor, SD to George and Frances Bouska.
As a child she remembers both her grandmothers being good cooks. In fact one of her grandmothers baked kolaches for Roy Rogers when he visited Scotland, SD.
Marie attended St. Wenceslaus Elementary School in Tabor, SD. Her high school days were spent at Tabor High School During her freshman year, the hot lunch program was introduced. Marie worked in the kitchen for 3 ½ years. She also prepared meals at home during the summer when her mother was doing field work.
Marie attended Mount Marty College and received a 2 year degree. She taught first and 2nd grade in LeMars, IA. for 4 years.
On June 15th, 1963, Marie married Duane Vitek at Tabor. They lived near Wagner, SD for 3 years, then moved to a farm near Tyndall, SD. In December of 1973, they bought a farm near Scotland, SD.
In 1980 Marie started to work part time at Ray’s Lounge in Scotland.
Marie is the mother of six children and has one brother and 2 sisters.
Editors Note:
Being one of the Test Subjects (or victims as we often referred to ourselves, and now as the survivors) I may or may not be able to answer questions about the recipes, I have tried to faithfully copy them as they are in the cookbook. Some terms may not be very precise, and there may sometimes be things left to each cooks best judgment. |
